'Time for Absolutely Anything'- Ulster Business

There's something soft and gentle about the Fermanagh countryside that you don't find anywhere else in Ireland.
The blend of clear lakes and green pasture combined with the feathery morning mist produce a quality that is at once the essence of contentment.

Throw in the understated but genuine welcome and you have an intoxicating mixture, which soothes the visitor.

Arthur Cadden knows all about this and for the past few years he has been building a business based on this recipe for health, happiness and a well-earned break.

The venue is Lusty Beg, a haven of activity but if you require peace and quiet it will do just as well.
Cadden has developed a superb product which will appeal to the visitor both tourist and corporate alike.

For the corporate client the island is one of the best team building environments and series of activities to be found anywhere in Ireland. Roll in the great food, the lively pub with traditional music, conference faculties, indoor swimming pool, excellent self-catering accommodation and a host with a penchant for making you welcome and Lusty Beg has it all really.

Now before any of you cynics are wondering how this praise can be so fulsome its because its all true and you don't expect anything less from your leading business publications.

Take the team building activities for example. Your management team will never be the same again after its had to find plutonium, load it into the back of a trailer and negotiate the rough terrain in a land rover while all the time fending off the sneak attacks of a balaclava rabbie armed with high power water pistols. Firstly they'll be wet and exhausted, goes without saying, but they will have to make their way round in a couple of hours, depending on one another and trying not to get stuck in mud.

And at the end of it there always the hot shower in the log cabins to south aching muscles and a tall pint of what you fancy to numb the pain- any excuse eh?

Oh and don't forget the isolation- there's only one-way on and off the island and that's by ferry!

And if that activity isn't on your agenda, then try anything you like. Arthur and his team can make it happen for your company- jet skiing, canoeing, soccer- anything!

'Island Idyll' By Una Morris, Irish Tatler

"A few miles past Enniskillen, continue on the B82 along the lower Lough Erne. Drive through Kesh onto Boa Island and find the left turn for lusty beg. Go to the telephone box and dial 0 for ferry."

You'd be forgiven for thinking that these were a couple of lines from an Irish spy movie, no this is how to get to Lusty Beg Island, a small secluded holiday retreat to the North of Lower Lough Erne.

The island feeling started long before we reached Lusty Beg Island itself. The last hour of our journey had been spent driving through Co Fermanagh, one of the most beautiful lake areas in the country. We are constantly surrounded by water- from roadside views of the green lakes with myriads of tiny islands to twisting rivers and sparkling streams.

But back to the phone box: there were three of us- husband, son and yours truly- standing sheepishly waiting for the ferry to come. It was only 200 yards across the water and it took all of two minutes to drive on. When we got to the other side, we headed for the reception/ bar/ reception to check in, have a drink and chill out - in that order.

The island is laid out in such as way that the Island Lodge Restaurant / bar and Courtyard motel are situated around a small natural marina, where you can canoe, fish, swim- if you are brave enough for Irish waters- berth your cruiser- or just hang out, have a drink and do nothing much really at all.

There are also 11 log chalets and ten fancier Scandinavian style lodges, lying quietly among the trees. The exteriors are all designed to fit in with the natural environment- lots of stone work and natural pine and any landscaping is kept to a minimum.

Leaving a feeling of natural beauty, rather than architectural design. But the peaceful retreat atmosphere is balanced out with lots of outdoor activities.

We started out by taking a canoe/ boat for two hours to navigate around the Lough. During the two hours, I discovered something fundamental about human nature - well about my marriage. We had two oars, one with a flat bit on both ends and one with a flat bit on only one end. We both knew the right way to row straight.

Unfortunately D's way of going straight was completely different than mine! After two hours of going round in circles with the odd shot forward and an occasional scoot sideways, we crawled back to dry land.

After that the only time I got wet was when I was in the shower or the swimming pool. But there are loads of other stuff to do- we hired bikes, did the nature trail, played tennis, table tennis, football, lay in the sauna on the shore of the lake and just generally chilled out.

The only excursion we made of the island over the couple of days was to go to the manor house hotel. When we returned back to Lusty Beg, just in time for the last ferry, we were replete and completely relaxed after a weekend of island living.
